The Newbie (Kyrie Carter Paranormal Mysteries #1) by Leta P. Hawk

Synopsis

Kyrie Carter can’t believe her luck when she wins a spot on a paranormal investigation with celebrity ghost hunter Drac Petery and his heartthrob brother Gabe. As the investigation begins, her main obstacles are her unsupportive teammates and her lack of ghost hunting experience. Her biggest critic is the ruggedly handsome but enigmatic Spook Steele, who takes an instant and intense dislike to the newbie and seems determined to see her fail.
However, Kyr soon realizes that her flesh-and-blood rivals are the least of her worries. The investigation takes a dark turn when the team finds evidence of a decades-old murder mystery, and Kyr becomes the victim of the resident spirit’s violent attacks. The discovery of a family connection to the Berkeleys explains the spirit’s malevolence.
Will Kyr be able to help the Peterys unravel the mystery and put the Berkeley mansion spirits to rest, or will she become another victim of the house’s tragic history? And will she be able to sort out her romantic feelings for the off-limits Gabe and her growing but unwelcome attraction to Spook Steele?

I received this book in return for an honest review.
I found this story interesting. I have to admit, it's not often I come across a ghost/paranormal book that keeps me on my toes. The Newbie is like any other story really.... it's a old haunted house. Common right? It is, but I have to say, there is something about the way Leta Hawk wrote it that left me wanting more and wondering what will happen next. I enjoyed all the characters EXCEPT the main character. She was way to whiny and cried way to much. It kinda annoyed me that she wanted to be big and bad but the second something made a noise she turned into a blubbering mess, needing a guy to carry her out of the house. What I do like is that nothing stopped her. Even though the guys gave her hell and she WAS a cry baby (and she knew this) she didn't let it stop her from going back and trying to solve the mystery. The ending was okay... but I really expected more from it. Especially the big finale... it just left me going "what... that's it?! What a rip off!" Though it does leave me curious about what will happen in book two. Hopefully the big showdown will be awesome. Lol

The cover is what really drew me in with this book. It's so simple yet temping. Left a lot open for me to be curious as to what this book could be about.... Except the text. I hated that everything ran together in one giant word. But hey, to each their own right?
Now on to about the story.... Really amazing idea for a story but everything happened within the first five (or so) chapters. It all seemed rushed way to fast and then the rest of the book just seemed to be a drag. It was really hard for me to keep reading the book because I didn't really see the point in the rest of what happened or how it all turned out. I hated how she pushed her younger self way to hard then went bat crap crazy when things didn't work out EXACTLY how she wanted them to. I think she should have handled things a lot better than she had. Even though I found the idea of the story pretty awesome, I didn't like the story line so much... I think it kinda gives off the wrong intention and vibe. Instead of just picking herself up and dusting off, she stays stuck upset over this guy and would rather go back and change EVERYTHING so she doesn't get hurt again rather than learning from the situation. I just kinda think she should have been a stronger character. And the whole "study harder" thing was just plain selfish to me because even though it was HER, she doesn't remember doing any of that stuff so she doesn't remember the stress. I think she should have done all that in the first place. Not waited for a second chance that just so happened to show up.

The Alpha Bet by Stephanie Hale

Synopsis
Some teenagers use drugs or sex to escape overbearing parents. I used books. All my life my mother has been hovering over me, afraid to let me experience ANYTHING. So I got really good grades, graduated from high school when I was sixteen, and escaped to a new life—my own life—at college. To jump-start my social life, I decided to rush the Alphas, the most exclusive sorority on campus. Things started to get complicated when I told one little white lie. (Okay, maybe not so little.) Then one of the sisters invoked the Alpha Bet, a super-secret set of alphabetical tasks we pledges have to complete to prove our loyalty. Now, the Alpha Bet has taken over my life. Can you spell B-E-T-R-A-Y-A-L? "Reminiscent of Meg Cabot and Kieran Scott, Hale sets a perfect tone—overtly bubbly with glimpses of Grace Kelly’s obvious intelligence—for her gawky, brainy wallflower with a delightful personality."

I have to admit, seeing how girly this book is and when I first started it, I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did. It's a really good inspiring books that shows you that no matter how different you are, there are people that will accept you.
The whole Charlie relationship really freaked me put though until I got to the end and found out the truth.
It really kept my attention as well. It was at a pretty good pace, though there were a few times it lost me .... Not even really sure why.

I'm glad things worked out in the end. I just hated how she treated her mama.
The whole sending the little brother photos of her roommate really grossed me out though. That was uncalled for. Typical male there but still, he's a freaking kid.
